Shir is unskilled in most traditional forms of magecraft, and thus focuses on two basic spells Structural Analysis, the power to analyze the structural composition of objects, and Reinforcement, the power to increase their structural integrity,3 such as the sharpness of a sword and durability of a shield. Even so, he is unskilled in using Reinforcement, and can only use Structural Analysis competently due to it being a part of his daily life, and his various applications of them are limited. Later on, he discovers that his true primary ability is Projection or rather his own personal sub type known as Tracing, which allows him to recreate objects from memory. The clearer the image in the users mind, the better the final result. It is also later revealed that the reason for his sub par performance is the fact that he is not actually using his inborn Magic Circuits, but is rather making Circuits from his nerves, a ritual Kiritsugu had taught him in hopes that he would give up on magecraft and return to being a normal boy once his circuits are finally opened, Shir experiences a great boost in power and performance. Shir finds himself to be particularly adept at Projection, able to Trace the history and special properties of the items, though they are of slightly lesser quality they are downgraded one rank from the original due to the Earth trying to destroy them. This spell gives Shir the unique distinction as one of the small handful of modern humans capable of matching and even defeating Servants in direct combat due to him being able to copy the strength and skill of whoever is connected to his current weapon. At the culmination of his abilities is his Reality Marble, Unlimited Blade Works, which is the source of his unusual projection magic. In order to activate it, Shir must recite a ten line incantation that represents his entire life and worldview. It is his inner world that is a self contained alternate reality, within which exists all of the materials Shir needs to recreate any bladed weapon, and manifests itself as a barren wasteland covered in all the swords Shir has ever seen or known of with a beautiful dawn on the horizon to represent his unbreakable hope. The fact that he has a Reality Marble makes Shir a one of a kind human, as only non human creatures such as demons or vampires usually possess them due to their non human perception of reality. He loses this spell permanently in Heavens Feel due to him becoming human again and his perception of the world normalizing, though it is noted that he is attempting to find a way to regain it after the War. For Shir, projection is not truly creation, but transporting the desired sword from his inner world to the outer, explaining his unusual proficiency with it. Shir is able to control all of the swords in Unlimited Blade Works using only his mind, using them to attack his opponent without having to physically touch them and can even create his own weapons with enough concentration. His swords also suffer no degradation of strength when his Reality Marble is deployed, as his world overwrites the Earth and its laws. Backing Shir up is his and Sabers Noble Phantasm Avalon The Everdistant Utopia, the most powerful of all Noble Phantasms which renders the user safe in the realm of the fairies and keeps them from dying or aging through constant regeneration. This Noble Phantasm was used by Kiritsugu to save Shirs life and mostly lay dormant, passively healing any wound he received for the next ten years, at which point it is described as essentially being a part of his soul. His accidental summoning of Saber through it caused it to awaken and eventually was used by himself and Saber during their final battle with Kotomine and Gilgamesh in the Fate route. In the Fate route, the manga and the first anime he develops feelings for Saber and falls in love with her the moment he sees her 4 he rarely allows her to fight unless necessary and is set on convincing her that her life meant something. Shir is unable to comprehend that he is in love with her at first, as he believes he is unworthy of loving or being loved. He is also confused by the fact that her presence is making him think selfishly for the first time in his life, to the point where he begins to want to abandon the War and elope with Saber, and is only held back by the fact that she wouldnt be happy. Shir accepts in this route that there will be evil people that he must kill to protect others. He eventually defeats Kirei Kotomine by stabbing him with the Azoth Sword, a gift Kirei gave to Rin years ago and does the impossible by resisting Angra Mainyus corruption, something no Servant besides Gilgamesh had ever accomplished, through the purity of his heart and sheer will. He then orders Saber to destroy the Holy Grail, causing her to fade away after she professes her love. The Shir in this route embraces his ideals to the very end. In the Realta Nua version, an epilogue to Fate can be unlocked by getting every ending. Saber goes to Avalon after her death and waits several centuries to see Shirou again. Shir, rendered immortal by Avalon, endures many hardships in his life and never stops believing that he will find Saber and spends the next fifteen hundred years protecting the innocent and championing justice however he could.
